Composting Site
Public Compost Site Available Beginning April 1st, 2025
In an effort to enhance environmental sustainability and reduce waste, the City is introducing compost bins at the Public Works facility at 600 Petersville Road. These bins are part of a broader initiative to encourage residents to compost their organic waste, thereby diverting it from landfills and reducing the City's overall carbon footprint. The drop-off compost bins are located at the Public Works facility - they are not bins for the public to take home.
What Are Compost Bins For?
Compost bins are designed to collect organic waste, such as food scraps, yard trimmings, and other biodegradable materials. The purpose of these bins is to facilitate the composting process, which involves the natural decomposition of organic matter into nutrient-rich soil. This compost can then be used to enrich gardens, parks, and other green spaces within the City.
Benefits of Composting:
- Reduces Landfill Waste: By composting organic materials, the amount of waste sent to landfills is significantly reduced, helping to extend the lifespan of these facilities.
- Decreases Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Organic waste in landfills generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting helps mitigate these emissions.
- Enriches Soil: The compost produced is rich in nutrients, which can improve soil health and support plant growth.
- Promotes Sustainable Practices: Encouraging residents to compost fosters a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
By participating in this program, residents can contribute to a greener, more sustainable community.
The bins will be accessible to the public Monday – Friday from 7:30am-3:00pm beginning April 1, 2025.
